Symposium 2018
On Thursday, 14 June 2018, the 7th Biobased Performance Materials symposium was held on Wageningen Campus, the Netherlands.
The BPM research focuses on two types of polymeric materials: polymers produced by plants and polymers from biobased building blocks produced via biotechnology or chemical catalysis. The latest trends and developments in both fields have been discussed during the symposium on 14 June; a day full of examples of recent and future developments from the program, presented by companies, ranging from large multinationals to SMEs, active in the circular and biobased value chain.
The program on 14 june was divided into three sessions, in which the development of products, research into new polymers and the processing of materials are discussed. For example, Lawrence Theunissen of Reverdia talked about new products with polybutylene succinate (PBS), Annet Vrieling from Avebe about bio-PE films with improved barrier properties and Wouter Jan van den Berg from Icopal about innovative sustainable roofing materials.
In the second session, Frans Kappen from Wageningen Food & Biobased Research showed the possibilities of natural rubber from dandelions, Bram Fieten from Wydo NBD discussed performance materials from itaconic acid and methacrylic acid and Tijs Nabuurs from DSM Coating Resins talked about biobased binders.
In the session on processing, Jürgen de Jong of Synbra Technology talked about foam extrusion of PLA and Erwin Honcoop from Croda Smart Materials about biobased sound and vibration damping materials for railways. Chris Smit from Océ Technologies focusesd on adjustable biobased polymers for digital printing applications.
